In 1965, the Omega Speedmaster became the only watch to pass NASA testing. Omega and Swatch have just launched a very different MoonSwatch – the Speedmaster MoonSwatch 1965. It is still based on the Speedmaster Moonwatch, but the special feature is that the chronograph sub-dial uses the “19 hours” and “65 minutes” scales for the first time, commemorating the first OMEGA chronograph to pass NASA flight certification on March 1, 1965. The replica Omega Swatch Speedmaster MoonSwatch 1965 chronograph meticulously recreates all the features of the Speedmaster tested by NASA 60 years ago. The vintage OMEGA logo (on both the strap and the crown), the hands and the font used for the inscriptions all echo the style of the original watch, giving this modern version a charming retro feel. But this watch also presents more surprises. For example, the dial design of the watch pays tribute to the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional 310.30.42.50.04.001.
The two counters at 10 and 2 o’clock also feature a new design. The top of the first counter displays the number 19 (normally 60), while the other displays the number 65 (normally 10), symbolizing the year 1965. The counters also symbolize 1965 and the 60th anniversary of NASA’s flight certification: the 10 o’clock counter displays the number “19”, the 2 o’clock counter displays the number “65”, and the 6 o’clock counter displays the number “60”, which are clearly visible under ultraviolet light. The hands and hour markers are covered with grade A Super-LumiNova luminous coating, which is clear and easy to read even in the dark.
The replica Omega Swatch Speedmaster MoonSwatch 1965 features a mission statement printed on the caseback and the OMEGA X SWATCH logo on the dial and crown. The aerospace-chic vibe is completed by a grey VELCRO® strap, designed to match the suit of a professional spaceman, with contrast stitching to match the case and strap colours. The watch faithfully retains the key features of the original OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch: the asymmetrical case, the famous tachymeter scale “dot over 90” design, and the unique Speedmaster counters. Like all Bioceramic MoonSwatch models, this new watch also features a chronograph function. Like all watches in the OMEGA X SWATCH collaboration, this non-limited edition “1965” watch is made from an innovative bioceramic material patented by Swatch Switzerland, a unique material made from a blend of two-thirds ceramic and one-third bio-sourced material extracted from castor oil.
